TRADUCCIÓN.— (LA HISTORIA DE SANTA ROSA). Rodeado por altas cumbres, que hasta las mismas nubes con gallardía se estiraban, para beber de ellas en los inviernos las nieves y en los veranos las aguas, bien por mediación de nieblas o de ricas escarchadas, o de lluvias que sin tino cuando los cielos tronaban y la centella o el rayo como la luz caminaba, y las nubes se rompían en torrentes de riadas. O cuando en las noches claras bajo el manto de estrellas, que cubrían todos los campos mojados por la alborada, que tal hartaba a todo el valle, que como jardín divino, por las altas montañas era cuidado por sus naturales murallas. —En este valle de ensueño, que mil nombres si llevara mal llamado jamás fuera, porque mil valles divinos, parecidos este ensueño, en mi Dulce Tierrina por todos sus lados la engalanan. —Este valle era un jardín que siempre verde lo estaba, lo mismo en el pleno invierno, que en el verano más caluroso, donde embrujadoras aldeas por todas partes poblaban, de gentes fuertes y bravas que felices trabajaban, desde que el sol salía, hasta que la oscura noche no dejaba ver ya nada. Sus tierras daban lo mismo el perejil que el trigo, que los guisantes tempranos, que cualquier clase de siembra que el labrador trabajara. En sus casas toda hambre del todo estaba apartada. —Las nobles y bravas gentes de aquel valle de ensueño, cuidaban a sus rebaños de ovejas, vacas y yeguas, que en los verdes prados, puertos, morteras u brañas, pastiaban abundantes y buenas hierbas. En una de las aldeas de este valle, hace muchos años se a alumbró esta historia, que yo escuché siendo niño, de boca de un buen vaqueiru, que también él la escuchara. —Esta leyenda o historia que yo les voy a contar ahora, fue nacida del amor del sufrimiento y la lagrima y de muchas otras cosas que alumbra el alma Humana. —Era la joven Rosina tan, pura y tan natural, tan dulce y tan hermosa, y también deseada estaba, que hasta el propío Hacedor otra mejor no creara. Era hija de una viuda de muy pequeña labranza, que entre las dos trabajaban, con la ayuda de las gentes de la aldea, que les prestaban cuando la necesitaban. Rosina era ése algo que embrujaba y encantaba, que sembraba la alegría por donde ella caminara. Rosina según las gentes, era un angelín del cielo, tan rubia y hermosa como las divinas Xanas. —Sus ojos eran misterio que al mirar todo lo embrujaba, alumbrando la alegría, repartiendo la esperanza, llenando a todos del gozo que en su alma se hornaba. Sus ojos hacían halagos prodigando las promesas sin ella decir palabra. Todos los mozos del valle estaban llenos de amor por la dulce y encantadora Rosina, y cada cual para si mismo ya se contaba amado por la preciosa diosa. —Cuando llega el tiempo de las fiestas o romerías en aquel valle de ensueño, todas sus gentes dejaban sus trabajos, y vestidos con sus mejores galas, iban alegres y felices, con santificado respeto, a festejar a su Santo o Santina, que en todo el año le rezara, rogándole que sus hembras tuvieran un buen parir, o que los lobos o el oso no matase a sus ganados, o que el tiempo viniese bueno para el maíz, y las patatas y que en el mes de recoger la hierba no lloviese ni lloviznara, para poder tener buena hierba en los pajares y las varas, así como muchas otras cosas que a sus santos les rogaban. Y tras de los rezos al Santo o a la Virgen que adoraban, todos se marchaban para sus casas en hermanada felicidad, y festejaban el banquete que hacían con los corderos mejores de sus rebaños, y otros guisos y confites que para tales fiestas se industriaban. —Y después de todos hartos y alegres en romería, se iban para la campa donde los músicos tocaban, y todos llenos le dichas con alegría danzaban, lo mismo las gentes viejas que algunas jotas bailaban, que toda la juventud que de danzar no casaba, siempre unida en el deseo, de la querencia que embruja, el amor que cada cual buscaba, más en los mozos que en las mozas, pues éstas son más recatas, porque la hembra que pierde su honra antes de ser casada, puede que jamás alcance la felicidad soñada. (Buen dote tienes hija mía, que eres hermosa y honrada, el día que pierdas tu honra sino eres mujer casada, tu dote no vale nada). Así hablaban las madres todos los días a sus hijas en los tiempos ya pasados, cuando la mujer sólo era el ama en su casa siempre que el hombre no estuviera. Pero hoy que la mujer es el juez que hace leyes o el guardia que te encarcela, o el abogado hablador que la justicia menea, o el fiscal endemoniado que te asesina sin pena, digo que hoy la mujer muy poco esta a su honra, su divinidad gloriosa, su ser la madre de Cristo, su ser querida y hermosa. —Y cogiendo la aguijada para arrear con tino esta leyenda o historia, les digo que en aquel valle de ensueño, todos los mozos, bailaban, reían, cantaban y todo cuanto hacían y pensaban iba encaminado para enamorar a la hermosa y divinizante Rosina, pues todos estaban hambrientos y sedientos hasta el enloquecimiento, por poder satisfacerse con las embrujantes miradas de sus misteriosos y encantadores ojos, algunos mozos más osados, le decían muy despacio y con grande veneración, que estaban enloquecidos de amor por ella. Pero Rosina sonriéndose siempre con su candidez acostumbrada, a ninguno le daba su sí, e inocente como un ángel, con sus embrujantes ojos y su dulce palabra, por igual a todos halagaba, envolviéndoles dentro de un embriagador y divino fuego en el que sólo su amor les quemaba. Y así con todos por igual, bailaba y se reía, hablaba y cantaba, y sus ojos misteriosos el puro e inocente amor por todas partes sembraba. "JUAN EL CURANDERO" —Era Juan hombre maduro sin llegar en esta edad a su total madurez, y era viejo en ser tan pobre como la propia vejez, pues no hay viejo que sea rico aunque más dineros tenga que el mundo que tener. Ya que el dinero en el viejo (y a esta edad yo he de llegar si la parca en mi camino no me siega mi querer, y quisiera me respeten como yo desde mi infancia con el anciano lo hacer) u otra riqueza que fués, sólo le sirve de abrigo, de tranquilidad tal vez, y para que todos sus deudos le mimen y les respeten, como el mejor de sus males para heredarle después. —Yo no se si me comprenden por no explicarme muy bien, yo no llamo viejo al tiempo, porque el tiempo viejo no es, yo llamo anciano a los seres que han perdido la alegría, la ilusión y el apetito, y cuando esto se pierde el más joven viejo es. —Digo yo que me han contado, que Juan no tenía riquezas, y que vivía solitario en una humilde cabaña que él mismo se fabricara, era hijo de aquel valle, dónde sus padres un día tuvieran buena labranza, pero siendo él un niño que apenas lo recordar, vendieron toda la hacienda y se fueron a ultramar. Y en aquellas tierras ricas al otro lado del mar, Juan conoció la fortuna que del trabajo sus padres la pudieron enfornar (hornar), también conoció el amor, y la alegría de vivirlo con el placer que él te dar, pero el vicio de las drogas que a otros muchos te empujar, le hicieron perder su suerte y en la desgracia rodar, y esta negra desventura al presidio le llevar, de dónde salió tan pobre de riquezas y de honor, que en él ya nadie confiar. —Desesperado y mendigo, sin familia y sin hogar, Juan regreso a su Tierrina, al valle que había nacido, y a las argutas montañas que con recelo le guardar, y una vez en el lugar dónde él al mundo llegar, en terreno comunal edifico su cabaña, y tras ella hizo una huerta que con sapienza cuidar, dónde florecía la planta que tras bien elaborada él con placer la fumaba y del mundo se olvidar. —Juan vivía de la caza, de la pesca de ser hombre de mente despierta a ultranza, y quizás bien educada en el delicado oficio de curar la enfermedad, pues él sanaba a las gentes con sus potingues y ungüentos industriados con las plantas que en el monte él arrancar, así aliviaba el reuma, los catarros y otros males, que el médico no sanar. Muchas veces sus palabras sabias por bien atinadas, hacían más bien al enfermo, que el doctor y su receta, que a parte de ser muy cara, raras veces era eficaz. —Juan era un astur de casta, de estatura premediada, de rostro agradable y firme, con nariz recta y holgada, de boca que sonreía aunque palabra no hablara, de ojos tristes y avispados, del color de la esmeralda, sus cabellos eran negros para contraste de raza, y su caminar sereno tranquilidad sin par, le daban el firme aire de poder y libertad. Juan practicaba la industria de curar la enfermedad no cobrando jamás nada, pero todos le ofrendaban mucho más que si cobrara, quizás fuese porque Juan, era hombre que las gentes le querían, le admiraban y le honraban. —Una tarde estaba Juan sentado frente a su casa, que alejada de la aldea en solitario se alzaba, silencioso y cabizbajo no viendo que le observaban, Juan cavilaba en silencio, o tal vez feliz lo fuera y en nada quizás pensara. Más de pronto alguien le dijo con voz cristalina y clara, como las aguas que nacen en las fragosas montañas, con voz cantarina y brava, como la que hace el malvís en la libertad del campo, dueño y señor de su ente, no siendo esclavo de nada, con voz mansa y adulzada, como la que hace la hembra, cuando a su amado le invita, o a su cachorro le halaga, con voz cálida e inocente, como los rayos del sol que dan vida a todo ser, sin preguntar si hay algunos que no merecen tal gala con voz que era un embrujo, para cualquier ser viviente que su música escuchara: —¡Señor Juan! ¿Se encuentra enfermo, o tal vez tiene tristezas que le infelizan su alma? —Juan levantó su mirada, y allí en mitad del camino Rosina le reparaba, con sus candorosos ojos y una divina sonrisa que en sus boca bailoteaba. —¡No preciosa soy feliz, no tengo en pobreza nada, que me fabrique el dolor, ni el odio ni la venganza, ni el egoísmo maligno, ni una ilusión desquiciada! —¡Soy feliz porque soy rico, al saber que no poseo querella de hacienda vana, tengo comida y cobijo, vecinos que bien me quieren y muy tranquila mi alma. —¿Puedo sentarme a tu lado a charlar si tiene gracia...? —¡Tengo la gracia del cielo, cuando hasta mi lado llega, la hermosura más preciada por la inocencia guiada! —¡Puedes Rosina si quieres hacer cuanto a ti te plazca! —¡Señor Juan, yo soy curiosa, como mujer bien pagada, cuentan en la aldea cosas de usted y ninguna mala, pero yo quiero saber esa tristeza que tienen sus ojos que ahora me halagan, ese no querer tener, cuando todos en la vida, por el poseer se afanan! —¡No están tristes mis pupilas, ya que en verdad son dichosas, tal vez se encuentran cansadas, por el placer tan inmenso que en todo momento gozan! —¿Cómo es posible señor, que estando sólo en su choza con agranda *** ***y de todas sus bondades, y ocasiones hubo muchas en que estándome yo sola he pensado en bien amarle. Señor Juan, nunca me quite de este placer que yo siento al poder acariciarle, al poder amarle tanto, como no he podido amar, nada más que a la mi madre! — Juan dominando el deseo que su espíritu sentía, de sus sentidos dislocos perdidos en el placer del vicio que da la carne, pudo un tiempo detener prisioneros tales naturales males, pero al fin incontrolable, besó a Rosina en sus ojos que eran maravillas tales, con el ardor de la quema controlada y sin desmanes, y acariciando su rostro con hermosura pureza del más escogido ángel, le dijo ya emocionado despreciando sus maldades: —¡No sé si el cielo me premia dándome cariños tales, o si me pide un calvario que en duda pongo en llevarle, sólo sé Rosina hermosa, princesa maravillosa con designios celestiales, que en mí hallarás tú siempre cuanto tenga y pueda darte, puedes venir a mi casa siempre que el querer te llame, mi puerta no tiene llave ni para ti, ni tampoco para nadie! —¡Señor Juan, soy tan dichosa que mi pecho se me abre, y por él se me desbordan todo un Firmamento lleno de gozosas alegrías, porque no tienen cabida en mi alma que las hace! —Juan de nuevo acarició aquel ángel tentador, y sin poder contenerse aunque luchó con ardor, sus labios fueron directos aquella rosa encarnada, que era su boca preñada de virginidad y amor. Y lejos de ser esquiva a tan bacanal caricia que se enredaba en el beso que en sus labios se prendió y aquella fuente de gozo, de un deseo incontrolable de un embrujo tentador, respondió al beso en medida que el beso que recibió, y rauda salió corriendo envuelta en gloriosa dicha, con marcado rubor, le dijo adiós con su mano, hacia su aldea marchó. —Juan quedó sólo y maltrecho por el placer el dolor, sin llegar a comprender, que tanta inocencia pura, tanta hermosura y candor, pudieran vivir tan juntas en natural parangón, y darle a él tanta dicha, como carga de dolor. "LA MUERTE DE JUAN" —Fue condena para Juan imposible de vencer, aquel fuego que prendió Rosina en su corazón, era un veneno de infierno que le empujaba al placer, y no al honrado sendero de querer a la inocente como el padre que no ser. —¿O quizás es el demonio ese ángel celestial que en figura de Rosina a mí me vino a tentar, el inocente soy yo que en la inocencia fiar? —Ella se dejó halagar, yo con pasión la besé, y busqué en sus labios puros no el cariño paternal, sino el deseo carnal que en todo Humano se encuentra, como dios del placer, muchas ocasiones hay que ni el más santo barón, ni la más casta mujer son capaces de frenar y violan la castidad en su vida alguna vez. Si a este extremo llegan ellos, ¿qué podré yo hacer que soy un vicioso por demás de la droga y el placer? —Y ella se dejó halagar, y con su candorosa inocencia despertó en mí otra vez, las locas ansias de amar, que dormidas las tenía pensando que nunca más volverían a despertar, puede que ella sin querer me incitara en la pasión, por eso yo la besé, y busqué en sus labios rojos fontana de gran placer, apagar mi sed de amor, y cuando tal degustaba pude y en ella yo notar, que respondía a tal goce no con querer paternal, sino con ansias de amar, y al igual que yo gozar. Y sus pechos prominentes recios por virginidad, he visto que se alteraban sacudidos por el goce que al largo beso arrancar. Y sus ojos hechiceros brillantes como luceros cuando el alba se acercar, he visto que se cerraban extraviados y sumidos, como buscando en su mente un acomodo gustoso del placer desconocido que ella aún no degustar. —¡Más que digo! ¡Estoy demente! —¡Cómo piensan mis sentidos cosas tan bajas y ruines de una virgen inocente que como a padre me amar! —¡Santo cielo, estoy perdido dentro de este fuego ciego que sin mudanza ninguna, me conduce con fiereza al desbordado deseo, de una pasión tan demente que me roba mi sosiego, y que me empuja insolente al pensamiento más bajo que mi mente fabricar! —¡Qué feliz era yo antes en este mi bello valle, dónde desde lejos vine con el propósito firme de hallar la tranquilidad fundiéndome con la paz, que tanto necesitaba mi alma ya emponzoñada por tanto el cuerpo gozar! —¡He de marcharme del valle mañana a lo más tardar, he de huir de esta pasión que a velocidad del rayo me roba sin contenerla, el tesoro más preciado que era mi tranquilidad. He de alejarme si quiero que mi deseo carnal, consumado no se vuelva con la fiereza bestial que en afán pone la fiera cuando el hambre la devora, y para calmarla mata al inocente cordero criatura celestial, que muere en la fiera garra sin pronunciar un sollozo, como morirá la honra de la inocente Rosina, para calmar el Placer que en mi alma dislocado aspira al rico bocado de su hermoso virginal! —Ya la tarde caminaba en pos de la oscuridad, que ensombrecida en el valle hacia sus cumbres se alzar, Juan se adentró en su cabaña casi enfermo por la fuerza que había gastado en pensar, queriendo sepultarse dónde ni el mismo se hallar, para olvidar el tormento de la más grande pasión que en su vida le tentar, por eso, con sus hierbas drogadizas y otros diversos potingues que él sabía preparar, mezclados con miel y caña, en una olla con agua al mor del fuego aliñar, y cuando en su punto estuvo aquella droga fatal, se acostó en su ruin camastro y a tragos largos y ralos con gusto se la libar, para apagar en su mente su pensamiento encendido que en la Rosina quemar. —Tiempo hacía que la noche del valle ya se adueñar, cuando sintió que en su puerta alguien la abría y entrar, en el interior del cuarto con voz candorosa y suave en murmullo cariñoso que al de la gloria apariar, le decían con misterio que le pareció que era su mente que trasvolada al ente que le tentaba, de él se quería también por doble puerto mofar: —¡Señor Juan! ¿Está dormido...? —A la luz del mal candil que iluminaba la alcoba, con destellos que bailaban en las borronosas sombras, dándoles casi una vida que a más claridad no hallar, Juan vio a Rosina sonriente, entre azorada gozosa, e incorporándose presto en su catre empobrecido, preguntole preocupado aunque alegre por pensar, que en su sino escrito estaba que aquella virgen doncella sólo venía a buscar, el aplacar su pasión con la que a él le atenazar: —¿Cómo se atreves princesa, ángel hermoso del cielo, criatura primorosa, diosa de mis desvelos, ruina de mis desventuras, soberana de mi cielo, cómo te osas Rosina, encantadora xanina, que has embrujado mi alma con tu amor que al ser divino yo como mortal no espero, cómo te atreves te digo, en venir desde la aldea, sólo y en noche sombría, hasta esta casa malvada, dónde mora tu deshonra yvive mi desespero? —¡Señor Juan, no pude, y juro que lo intente con denuedo, pues algo, si que no comprendo, una fuerza misteriosa que me traspasaba el alma, entre alegre y pesarosa, entre dichosa gozosa, repugnante y vergonzosa, una pasión tan profunda que al ser salvaje es sincera, una poderosa magia que al ser divina es misterio, me obligó sin yo oponerme, a que dejase mi casa muy despacio en silencio, me trajo a su presencia, y aquí estoy porque le quiero! —Juan con tristeza profunda y alegría en alto cielo, con pasión que se apagaba y en amor ardía fiero, asió la infusión de droga y bebió con el consuelo, de ver abierta a la postre la puerta de su gran cielo. Cogió Rosina la olla de entre las manos de Juan, que no hizo ni un amago para impedir que ingiriera de aquella su medecina que le aploacaba sus penas y con su sonrisa hermosa, inocente y candorosa, bebió Rosina con gozo la caramelosa droga, tras beber un largo sorbo, siguió sonriendo feliz, a la par que se acostaba en el catre a par de Juan, y con sus palabras dulces y sus manos primordiosas, caricias sembraba en Juan a la par que le decía: —¡Algo tiene esta bebida que de alegría me llenar, algo que sabe tan dulce como la miel en panal, algo que enciende mi alma y en el aire me hace andar, tal parece que soy ángel con alas en mis espaldas que me permiten volar! —¡Señor Juan, mi Juan querido, siente un calor en mi cuerpo y la ropa me estorbar, voy a quedarme en porricas (desnuda) para contigo gozar, soy feliz mi Juan querido, tanto que dudo en el mundo, un ser con más dicha y gozo, como yo no sé si habra! —Y así entre besos y abrazos, caricias, risas y juegos, en aquel renqueante catre sucio y pobre por demás, Rosina la candorosa, la inocente virgen pura, perdió su honra gozosa, conociendo jubilosa un placer que no soñar, perdió su casta inocente y a cambio ganó dichosa, saborear felicidad. —Toda la noche fue fiesta de besos que se perdían sumidos en el placer, de caricias de halagos, que hasta las puertas abiertas de su honra destrozada, llegaban en oleadas, sin jamás desfallecer. —Y así amándose ciegos sin pensar en el después, cantó el malvís su tonada y llegó el amanecer. —Fue entonces cuando extenuados de tanto amor y placer, fundidos en el abrazo que sólo el querer saber, se perdieron en el sueño feliz y de pesadez, que a los cuerpos adormece después de beber placer. —Se alarmó por la mañana la aldea que despertaba aprestándose al trabajo como cada día hacer. Se alarmó por los lamentos, llantos y gran desespero, que la madre de Rosina con grande pena lo hacer. —Puesto el pueblo sobre aviso, pronto cundió en todo el valle la noticia ya agrandada del dolor que acontecer. —Unos decían con pena, que tal vez fuera raptada por alguien que la querer. —Viejas hubo que dijeron porque que en misterios creer, que Rosina no era criatura humana, sino que era una Xana, y con ellas a sus fuentes otra vez querer volver. —Todas las gentes del valle la llamaban y buscaban, por los montes y praderas, por las ubérrimas cumbres dónde el utre (el águila) campaba, por las abexías (húmedas sombreadas) y abruptas fondigonás (hondonadas), por las veiras del regueiru (orillas del torrente), que cruzaba sulfuro la rica verde vallada, y todos con desespero perdían ya la esperanza de poder jamás toparla, y ya casi se creían, que Rosina era una Xana que a sus fuentes retornara. —Alguien llegó a la cabaña del bienhechor curandero, la vio abierta y solitaria, llamó a Juan con fuerte voz, y al ver que no contestaba, dentro de su casa entró. —Y allí, en el catre humilde del magnánimo señor, juntos y muy abrazados, sumidos en dulce sueño, Juan y Rosina dormían sin despertar a su voz. —Salió raudo de la casa quién el primero los vio, y a gritos dijo en la aldea dónde Rosina se hallaba y nadie se lo creyó. —Pero al afirmarlo fiero, y rogar que le siguieran, todos corrieron tras él, y entraron en la cabaña, y vieron a los amantes durmientes y entrelazados cual si fuesen uno dos. —Asustados los vecinos al ver lo que no creyeran aunque jurasen por Dios, zarandearon los dormidos, con rabia, odio y furor, y despertose Rosina, pero Juan no despertó. —No se alteró la Rosina, ni menos se levantó, halagó el pelo de Juan, con cariño le besó, y les dijo a sus vecinos con voz preñada de ira, de desprecio y de valor: —¡Dejazle dormir tranquilo, que vuestras horrendas voces no perturben a mi amor, y marcharos de mi presencia, pues no volveré a la aldea, ya que mi casa está aquí, porque desde hoy ya soy, ante Dios que es el que importa, la fiel esposa de Juan, al que le entregué mi honra y todo mi corazón! —Fue la madre de Rosina herida en su sentimiento con vergüenza con fuerza enloquecida por deshonra tan atróz, la que asiendo a Juan con envilecido furor, del catre al suelo tiró y allí en el suelo empobrecido, del miserable cuartucho, todos juntos comprobaron sumidos en un terror, que de miedo confudiólos al presenciar con pavor, que Juan seguía dormido, y en sus labios florecía una sonrisa feliz, que la muerte por la dicha al matarle le dejó. —¡Está muerto! ¡Le has matado! Dijeron aquellas gentes mirándola despavoridos, como si Rosina fuera demonio exterminador, como si aquella muchacha que siempre del pueblo tuvo el cariño y el halago, el aprecio más pagado, y el amor de los rapazus (mozos) que por ella suspiraban con buen querer e ilusión, cómo si aquella preciosa y angelical criatura que desde niña alegrara con sus cantes y sonrisas, galanuras y prestancias, sencillas y naturales, ausentes de vanidas y de hipócritas maldades, los vivires, y quehaceres de las gentes de aquel valle, de pronto se convirtiera en lo mas sucio y maldito que a un humano le caver. —¡Bruja del demonio eres Xana de gran maldición! —Dijeron algunas gentes con el odio retratado en sus ojos y audición —¡Has venido a esta cabaña tan sólo con la intención de asesinar a este hombre, que era nuestro curador y un santo de bendición! —Levantóse de aquel catre Rosina sin el pudor, y en porricas (desnuda) como estaba, con el cuerpo más perfecto que jamás la tierra dio, abrazose a Juan llorando entre gritos lastimeros tan cargados de dolor, que doblegarían en pena a otras gentes que no fueran sus vecinos que la odiaban, y con desprecio la miraban, con repugnancia y con terror. —¡Fostes vuexotrus baldrietchus, gafuróuxus achuquinus (fuisteis vosotros cobardes, despiadados asesinos), hijos de satan malditos, los que matasteis a Juan mientras que dormía yo, un sueño que no era sueño, sino gloria del Señor! —Gritóles Rosina airada, fuera de sí dislocada, transfigurado su rostro por tan inmenso dolor. —¡Yo pido al Señor del Cielo, o al rey del infierno fiero, que sobre vosotros baje poderosa maldición, que os quite la alegría, la paz y prosperidad por asesinos que sois! —Al día siguiente en el valle fue enterrado el pobre Juan, llorando sin ver consuelo, tras el féretro entablado Rosina le acompañaba hasta la dura morada dónde su cuerpo sin vida sería pasto de la tierra, porque de ella nació. —Con Juan se fue de Rosina la alegría alborozada, el brillo de su mirada cautivadora de amor, su virginidad gozada, sus sonrisas primordiosas que de ángel eran canción, su inocencia candorosa su felicidad dichosa, gozada en el mismo día que su honra se esfumo. —Más de dos meses Rosina en su lecho desesperada enferma de amor vivió, y casi su muerte halló por la pena que sufrió. —Cuando al fin salió del mal y a su cotidiana vida de trabajo retornó, lo hizo ilusionada de renaciente alegría, al saber que en sus entrañas un hijo estaba creciendo fruto de su gran amor. —Fue su vida desde entonces en aquel valle querido, la condena del infierno o un castigo del Señor. —Ella que siempre había sido la hermosura y la canción, la alegría y la sonrisa, la ilusión de tantos mozos que deseaban su amor, la inocente virgen pura sin orgullo ni obsesión, era ahora por sus gentes despreciada con horror, insultada muchas veces con ofensivas mentiras, dónde la airada venganza de la envidia recogió. Hasta los mozos que antes la trataban con cariño y marcada veneración, ahora la repudiaban, y con socarronas risas le lanzaban sucias sátiras, y la nomaban Paraxa (nombraban puta) con la misma asiduidad, que antes le decían bonita en cualquier otra ocasión. —Algunas viejas había que con sutil agudeza que en el aldeano es primor, sembraban entre las gentes el veneno acusador, con frases tan bien urdidas de historias que antiguas son, que Rosina era una Xana, que sólo traería al valle desgracias y males tales, que mejor era apredrearla y arrancarle de su cuerpo su vida de maldición. ALUMBRAMIENTO, MUERTE Y SANTIDAD DE ROSINA —En el culminante estado de su amada gestación, Rosina aquella mañana fue con sus vacas al prado, y allí en el raso campo a la luz clara del sol, se puso enferma de parto, y entre la hierba rosada a dar a luz se acostó. —La alegría acariciada que tanto tiempo esperaba, semilla que iba a nacer fruto de su gran amor, se tornaba por momentos en acuciante dolor, que le hacía revolcarse entre la crecida hierba, entre gritos lastimeros que le arañaban la entraña, porque su hijo quería ver la claridad del sol. —Ella sola en pleno campo, sin que nadie le ayudara, ni menos la consolara ni con palabras ni hechos, sin que una mano piadosa l'enxugara (le secara) los sudores que el dolor los hacía crecer, ella sola a lo salvaje, como siempre había vivido con natural sencillez, como si fuera una fiera con el dolor de mujer, estaba alumbrando un hijo, con la natural manera que en su día lo supo hacer. —El esfuerzo agobiador y el dolor desgarrador que sufriera al alumbrarlo, la privaron del sentido durante ignorado rato, y así el infante gritaba en la soledad del campo, mientras que era lamido con cariño casi humano, por Petra la perra loba, que con su ama la Xana apacentaba el ganado. —Desde las altivas cumbres dónde el águila vigila, con sus ojos encendidos de rapidez desmedida, y precisión ajustada a sus ansias de asesina, la soberana del aire había visto la muchacha, entre las hierbas tendida cual si muerta se encontrara, y al pequeño dando gritos, aunque Petra, cariñosa con maternidad lamiera, cual si su cachorro fuera, no el hijo de su ama. —Sanguinaria y despiadada vio la reina de las cumbres en el infante un festín, de sabrosa carne humana, y bajando de los cielos con sus alas replegadas y la rapidez del rayo cuando del trueno se escapa, arrancó en vuelo rasante de entre las fauces del perro que en el momento cuidaba con desmedido cariño al instante que hacia el cielo el águila se elevaba. —Lamentos que daba el niño entre las feroces garras de águila desalmada, mientras que la fiera alada sin piedad entre sus uñas al instante asesinaba. —Ladridos de grande pena que la perra noble y buena más humana que animal enloquecida hacia el cielo con fiera rabia lanzar, mientras que chillando alegre la reina de las montañas majestuosa planear, para llegar a su nido que colgado en el abismo del inaccesible risco, iba a ser mudo testigo, del ángel que en un festín, un águila devorar. —Al fin la pobre Rosina del olvido del desmayo a la razón retornar, y recorrió con anhelo de una alegría sin par, que había alumbrado a su hijo, y rauda miró angustiada en que lugar se encontrar. —Vio a la noble perra entre la hierba acostada que quejidos murmuraba cual si culpada lo estar, vio su razón desatada ensenderada en camino que a la demencia guiar, si no encontraba a su hijo que ella sabía que alumbrar. —Pero no... pudo hallarle, ni ya nadie le encontrar, porque aquella fiera alada un festín con él se dar. Su dolor al más medrado, su penar crecido al más, hicieron de ella el demente que sin perder la razón como loco se portar. Clavó sus hermosos ojos en el Infinito cielo, y con llanto desgarrado por mil lágrimas regado que las fuentes del dolor desmandadas en riada todo su ser anegar, reclamaba su justicia al Señor que así le hablar: —¿Dónde mi hijo se fue si en mi entraña ya no estar? —¿Dónde Hacedor Poderoso con tantos ojos que tienes que todo lo escudriñar, dónde mi hijo se fue, que ladrón me lo robar? —¡Yo le he visto aquí nacido, sano y fuerte cuando Tú mi sentido me quitar. —¡Dime Señor te lo ruego, y a cambio mi vida entera ahora mismo te entregar, dentro de atroz sufrimiento que inventado aún no estar!, ¿que malvado despiadado a mi hijo me robar? —¡Vamos Señor que no oigo tu Divina voz hablar! —¡Dime si mudo lo eres al menos con una seña dónde mi hijo morar! —¡Despierta Señor del Cielo, si es que dormido lo estás, y busca a mi hijo pronto que sino se morirá! —¡Oh Señor ya te comprendo, no me quieres ayudar, porque a nadie Tú le ayudas mientras que vivo lo estar! —¿Oh acaso soy yo la Xana que en las fontanas morar, y estoy viviendo un sueño que no es mi realidad? —¡Si así es mi creador, el sueño es mi verdad! —Revolcándose en la hierba que su drama presenciar, prisionera del dolor, que descanso ni sosiego, ni un instante le dar, ahogándose en las lágrimas, que de sus ojos brotar, la desgraciada parida horrendos gritos lanzaba, que en el aire se perdían fusionados y apagados en distancia, por el cante del malvís, el jilguero y la calandria, por el rumor de las aguas que felices y hermanadas, el bullicioso torrente hasta la mar las llevaba. Por la canción tan pareja que hace el grillo y la cigarra. Por el graznar de los cuervos y del águila malvada. Por la brisa cariñosa que acaricia oxiginada, los foyajes que orquestean músicas en la arbolada. —Solo Petra su fiel perra con sentimientos de humana, traspasada por la pena, acaricieba lamiendo las lágrimas de su ama, ella si podía decirle si su lengua en voz montara, que taimada criatura a su hijo devorara. —Más de pronto la Rosina, cómo si un demonio fiero en su alma se albergara, dándole vida a una idea que un dolor más encendido por ver clara su desgracia de sus sentidos saltara, con los ojos extraviados por la furia en tal creada, se levantó envenenada con ardor de herida fiera, y asiendo a su noble perra con sus manos encrispadas dirigidas por el odio de su razón desquiciada, apretóla por el cuello con el ansia de matarla, mientras que con voz rabiada gritaba desaforada: —¡Fuiste tu perra maldita la que mataste a mi hijo, la que con placer de averno hiciste de él un festín devorándome mi entraña, fuiste tu asqueroso bicho traicionero y carnicero, la que se comió a mi hijo mientras que yo avasallada por el dolor más profundo fuera de razón estaba! —¡Pero ahora morirás en mis manos desgraciada, y te rajeré tu vientre, y en pequeños pedacitos que enloqueceran mi alma, sacaré de él a mi hijo, aunque no sea nada más que para poder mirar los despojos de mi entraña! —Fuerte y grande era Petra la perra humanizada, que al verse tan maltratada por su ama desquiciada, luchó con fiereza noble librándose del dogal que en su cuello aprisionaba, logrando huir con lamentos hacia la aldea alejada. —Trás ella como una loca, llena de sangre y airada, con sus cabellos revueltos al viento que acariciaba, y sus ojos extraviados dónde la furia brillaba, acusando con palabras de maldición anegadas a su perra endemoniada, entró la moza parida en su aldea enloquecida, y los vecinos al verla en facha tan desastrada, lejos de apenarse de ella, los malditos la injuriaban, y la siguieron gozosos sonrientes en algarada, hasta llegar a la casa dónde Rosina moraba. —Y allí la vieron salvaje como la fiera rabiada, maltratar con una furia que de el tigre era copiada, a la Petra su fiel perra, que aunque comprendiera todo y sin poder decir nada, asustada y encogida miraba entre lamentos a su ama trastornada. —¡No te escaparás ahora de mi venganza malvada, bestia satánica y ruina, peor que tu hermano el lobo de donde has sido encarnada, tú has devorado a mi hijo, y yo te arrancaré tu alma! —¡Mientes bruja fuiste tú, la que vil muerte le diste igual que has hecho con Juan, y harás desgracias sin par en el valle mientras vivas, porque eres la Xana mala, qu’encaldas (que haces) calamidades, sin darnos ninguna dicha, por eso vas a morir ahora mismo por maldita! —Dijo una vieja rabiosa a la par que una pedrada le lanzó contra su cuerpo. Otras personas con saña a la vieja secundaron. Y así la Xana Rosina, la muchacha más hermosa que jamás criara el valle, la de mejor sentimientos, la de más puras maneras y naturales virtudes, moría a manos de sus gentes, apredreada y despreciada, tratada como una bruja, que sólo sembraba el mal. —Y Rosina no había sido nada más que un ángel bueno, que supo amar y vivir dentro de la libertad, tan natural y sencilla como la vida que crece en rico o pobre lugar, Rosina con ser antigua, siempre moderna será, como las mozas de hoy, si alguna sabe de veras lo que es la libertad, no el anárquico vivir que a su gusto se inventar. —Justamente el mismo día que sus malvados vecinos a la Xana asesinar, una peste pobló el valle, y’achegaba en fechura de morrinas, que dexaba a lus teixus ya les cortes, enxemaus de prexones y’animales, en fechura de cadarmus que fedíen, como guelen les morrines enus branus. (Y llegaba en hechura de mortandades, que dejaba a las casas y a los establos, sembrados de personas y animales, en forma de cadáveres que olían, como suelen hacerlo los cuerpos muertos abandonados en los campos con las calores de los veranos). —No fueron tardas las gentes de aquel próspero valle, en darse cuenta de que aquella calamidad que les rodeaba en forma de muerte, de dolor y de otros males, era un merecido castigo que el Cielo les enviaba, por haber dado muerte tan injustamente a la Xana Rosina, que era la criatura más deliciosa y buena que había nacido para bien de todos en el valle. —Pronto comprendieron todos al hacer memoria, que durante el tiempo que la melgueira Rosina había vivido junto a ellos, solo felicidad, alegría y bienestar habían gozado siempre, sólo desde el momento que tan vilmente la habían asesinado, sobre todos ellos desencadenárase la peor de las desdichas, tal parecía que la peor de las maldiciones pesara sobre ellos, para hacerles pagar la horrenda muerte que le propinaran a la inocente Rosina. Por esto, todos en la intimidad de sus pensamientos en un principio, le rogaban fervorosamente a la Rosina que les perdonara el cuantiosísimo mal que le habían hecho, y luego ya más tarde, todo el valle ya convencido de que sólo Rosina podría salvarlos de aquella maligna peste que llevaba a sus vidas y diezmaba a sus ganados, se reunieron en comunal junta las seis aldeas que formaban el valle, y acordaron con el consejo del cura que el veía en aquella santoral industria un saneado negocio para su cuarexa (cartera), levantarle en el centro del valle con todo el apremio que fuera posible, una pequeña capilla, dónde se veneraría la imagen de Rosina con el Santo nombre de Santa Rosa, que sería siempre la soberana y fiel guardadora de todas las gentes y eros de aquel valle, dónde siempre había vivido con la felicidad y alegría de un ángel, y había sabido morir, con la entereza, resignación y valentía, con que suelen hacerlo los santos mártires. —Y fue cosa casual, o tal vez milagrosa, pues nadie a ciencia cierta sabe hasta dónde llegan los misterios que encierran a la Humanidad, la historia o leyenda fue que nada mas que dio comienzo la santoral obra, otra vez volvió a reinar en el valle la alegría y a felicidad, la prosperidad y el bienestar que siempre tuvo, que según el parecer de todos desde el mismo Jardín del Cielo, a todos por igual les enviaba Rouxina, la Melgueira ya embruxante xanina, que ellos un día tentados por el mismo demonio, la habían insultado, despreciado e inhumanamente asesinado. —Y así todos los años, en la misma fecha que la habían tan vilmente apedreado quitándole tal vilmente la vida, viejos y jóvenes, gozosos y felices, alegres y llenos de sana y recia fe, cantaban y bailaban lo mismo que solía hacer la Xana Rosina, y satisfechos de natural felicidad se divertían al lado de su encantadora ermita, festejando con suprema fe su Romería.Primer Diccionario Enciclopédicu de la Llingua Asturiana > freirus
